Remediation for my research paper could be transformed in many different forms. If I was going to change the format of my research paper, I would probably change it to a media project. Because my paper is about e-cigarettes, that would make sense to do a media project due to the very recent controversy on them. I also feel like this would be the best way to get the information from my research paper across to the audience.
I would have to definitely have to cut out much of the background and tobacco information. This project would be much more persuasive so it would need to be a little shorter only including the important info. The audience that would probably be reading my paper would be the people that are interested in the health risks of e-cigarettes, so I would pick a couple main points, and keep my opinion out of it.

Research paper reflection

For my research paper, at first I was going to write about tobacco and it's increase or decrease in use because I had to chose a topic that had something to do with public health. But then when I started doing more research on it, I found much more information on the controversy of e-cigarettes. I wrote about that and whether or not they are the healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes. I did have to narrow my topic down to the e-cigarette so that made it much easier. One of my challenges was keeping my ideas organized, but when I got feedback from my teacher on how to organize them it made much more sense of what I was supposed to do. Another challenge for me was coming up with a thesis and remembering how exactly to write a research paper, because I hadn't done it in a couple years, and even then I was not properly taught how to write one.
The difference between this research paper and the first assignment was that this one you were reporting much more information than the last paper. On the last assignment we had to write about writing, but for this one we got to write about a current event and there was opinion in it as well. I think I liked writing the research paper more because I was able to have my input as well as facts. Also I like writing current events papers because I feel like I am getting much more out of that than I am any other paper.

For my research paper I am going to be researching in the field of public health. I haven't thought too much about what exactly I want to talk about, but in class the topic that came to mind was ebola. I would like to talk about the disease in general, but I would also like to research the effects of the name "ebola" and they way that people reacted to it when it came to America. Also how that had an effect on the views americans had about people from southern Africa where I believe it came from.

I learned a lot about public health while writing this paper. Not only did I find out the information about writing for my paper, but I also found out a lot of valuable information about the major in general, which is good because now I am more interested than I was before. I already had an idea for the most part about what kinds of writing was done in public health, so writing this paper supported the ideas that I had originally. I didn't know about the organization, but with the help of my interviewees and sources, I was able to find out more. One of the challenges that I had was trying to write an informational report and not make it sound like a summery paper. When I turned in my first draft I got a lot of great criticism back that helped me convert the summery into more solid information. I learned that I am not good at organization. I mean I can organize each paragraph, but I don't think I'm very good at connecting the two. I was a little confused how to make this paper 3 pages, so I felt at times I rambled on about things that weren't really too important, but I think overall readers will understand the main idea. But I like to write, I think I'm just better at writing things that allow for more opinions and ideas that come directly from me, rather than just reporting information. I like having group conferences if the circumstance had been different, but in this case I didn't really feel like I got a chance to ask question or to get help with my paper because the other person was overpowering. Also my partner had absolutely no clue what we were supposed to write, so I just sat there for most of the time listening to her figure out what to write, while we could have worked more on actually improving the papers. I would prefer for next time to do individual conferences of 15 minutes rather than the group conferences, so that way, there is plenty of time to solely focus on just the individual paper. Also the group conference was hard because we were writing about 2 completely different subjects, so it was hard to relate to each other.

            In the field of public health, there are many audiences that will read or analyze the information. The field itself is a very broad one and there are many different areas that communicate and work with public health. The main types of writing are informational pieces, informing people about some kind of public health issue. You can find all kinds of informational articles relating to public health online, either from a college website or just an article. When I interviewed an advisor at the University of Louisville, she said that the types of writing she mostly does are informational/persuasive pieces directed towards students or upcoming freshman informing them about public health. There are so many health related professions that work with public health, but all of them have one goal, to inform the public of any audience, about public health.

            I interviewed Tammi Thomas who is an academic Public Health advisor at the University of Louisville, and she was able to give me a lot of good information about the kinds of writing done in that field, and the kinds of writing that she does in her position. She said that most of the writing that she does are information/persuasive papers to students looking into majoring in public health. She provides students with a lot of valuable information about the major, and whether or not it is the right major for them. She said that her writings are somewhat persuasive, but the main goal is to reassure the student if public health is right for them. Public health isn’t for everyone, so when she talks to students or writes to them about it, it’s not necessarily convincing them that they should major in it, but maybe help them cross public health off of their list of possible majors, so they are able to narrow down their options. Thomas also informed me that most of the writing done within her field is informative, and that the majority of things writing are informing people about health. Health is so important to our culture, and the only way to spread the word is to inform people about the latest health updates or new ways to make peoples lives healthier and happier. Many people in our society want to be healthy and live a healthier life style, but they don’t know how or where to start. That’s where public health articles come into play.

            One of the academic articles that I found online was a study done on the hygiene of street vendor foods. This article consisted of data collection, interviews, statistics and more. It explains what the purpose of “ready to go” food, but also explains the main concerns. I chose this article because it gave me a good example of all the other aspects that go into writing an informational piece in public health. The article addressed both the bad and good of street vendor foods and gave the audience plenty of credible information to back up what the author was saying. The author also explains that although this study has been conducted before, there were a couple of things wrong with the research, and that was one of the reasons he did his own study.

It’s important to be accurate about your information when you general audience is the public. Public health is becoming more and more relevant and necessary to peoples lives, and that’s why these informational articles are written.

            Another article that I found online was one analyzing and comparing fish and meat. The article addressed all concerns that are would be a factor in someone’s everyday life, that might effect what they were eating.  It talks about what is more convenient to the normal person, or the price differences and what one can afford. It also talks about the socio economic status and culture that we live in, and how that can be a factor to the types of meat we chose to eat. So as you can see this is once again an informational article. The thing that I liked about this article is that it brought up all the factors that really do have an effect on the healthy choices made by our society. It addresses all the concerns, and doesn’t necessarily pick a side, but mostly just analyzes the differences between the two and why one is more popular than the other.

            One of the other articles that I chose was a non-academic one that I found online addressing the growing concerns of tobacco use in India. They give you their step-by-step process in conducting the research. This article gives you a ton of information about the harms that are caused “due to direct or indirect use of tobacco.” Although it is not considered an academic article, it still gives you the information that you would. Rather than it giving you a bunch of statistics and comparing and contrasting like most of the other articles I found, in this one, the research is actually conducted and that is the majority of where this information comes from. The article explains the steps that were taken, the before and after and background information. At the end, the author says that, “Of the 720 students who completed the first intervention, only 701 students completed the second intervention (dropout rate 2.64%)” this is showing us that the study did in fact work, and this statistic within the study makes the information credible.
